Brasileira do Chiado
Daily 08:00 – 02:00
Rua Garrett 120 [Metro: Baixa-Chiado]
With its old glamour this 100 years old coffeehouse in Art Nouveau style is still an institution in Lisbon. In the 1920s it used to be very popular with Portuguese artists and bohemians. The statue of writer Fernando Pessoa outside the cafe is a reference to that period. Nowadays, at daytime the cafe is crowded by tourist groups served by unfriendly waiters – it’s much nicer at night to have a coffee after dinner and before going to the bars and clubs in the nearby Bairro Alto. ›Brasileira‹ is not a gay cafe, but there had always been some eye-flirting between men.
